S2W4 Monday: Zynga, Nasdaq hacked; Social gaming addiction; Computer Flashback; Professor Teaches HTML

1. Zynga, Nasdaq Hacked
Here are a couple of stories that caught my eye. Firstly, the company Zynga, responsible for such gaming powerhouses as Farmville and Petville got hacked. The individual stole a whoping 400 billion in virtual poker tokens which amounts to about $12 million in real life. He then proceeded to try and fence these off to others to monetise his theft. Doesn't say much for Zynga security.

From virtual casinos to a "real" one, the Nasdaq technology stock bourse (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System) has also been hacked

2. Social Gaming Addiction

Here is a story which is cause for concern:

Here some statistics from a different article:

  • More young children know how to play a computer game (58%) than swim (20%) or ride a bike (52%)
  • 28% of young children can make a mobile phone call, but only 20% know to dial 911 in case of an emergency
  • 69% of children aged 2-5 can operate a computer mouse, but only 11% can tie their own shoelaces

Here is the article from zdnet.com:

Please leave a comment about your thoughts on gaming addiction, in particular on social network gaming. Have you been exposed to it? In what ways?

3. Computer Flashback

Here's a look back in time to the computers of yesteryear. Would you like one of these or a new iPhone 4? Many of these would sell at a premium today because they are collectors items:

Ok yes, basically anyone who plays video games has been addicted to one or another at sometime. But really? Farmville? For the love of god facebook is already dumb as hell. Farmdill takes it to a new level. And the games we get addicted to are console games, with months and sometimes years put into the creative process, they are worth being addicted to. But next time you worthless losers send me a request on facebook. I'll let you know in advance. I DONT WANT TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR DAMNED CAT THAT'S LOOSE ON YOUR FARM

well i was very in to the game Sims 2 & 3...me and my cousin would play from 6 pm to 3 am killing people, cheating on people, and making crazy celebrtiys. I also know someone who is addicted to Assassin's creed brotherhood. I could see why he was addicted because i started to play the first one and was very in to the game and the awesomeness of being a assassin!!!

i have played 978 hours of counter strike since novemeber 4th 2010 and its actualy worth being addicted to. Farmville has to be the worse game invented and i cant see why people get addicted to it.

Is quite funny how the FBI has so much time to look for virtual thieves while the United States is crashing down in bandalism. I believe that the FBI has to do a recheck on their priorities and start taking actions on real crimes not virtual ones.
Farmville is just a way to get people off the streets, I personally believe that this kind of games are good for some people, even though I dont play, i rather have a farmville Addict than a Heroin Addict on the streets.

Personally, I'm not hugely into videogames at the very start. I use facebook solely to keep in touch with friends, as most teenagers don't regularly check a email account. Just about everyone who has an activated facebook account has most likely looked around farmville, and I know myself that my mother was on the verge of an addiction for a while. When you start wanting to spend real money on pointless games such as that - you know you have a problem. I know people who, in the past, have spent money on games such as Runescape and, when at a younger age, Club Penguin. Sure, it's fine to play these games, but to spend real money on them just takes it too far for me.
Everyone knows how addictive games are - especially MMORPG games. I knew someone who met a guy in his early 20's who actually had to go to a World Of Warcraft rehab center - because he got so addicted. Hell, two close friends of mine periodically have to make the choice to uninstall their WoW games because it's getting in the way of their work for school and such.
Gaming addiction really is pretty terrifying - just so long as you have people to stop you at a certain point, you should be fine in the end.

I have owned tf2 (Team Fortress 2) for 3 years, in that time I have been one of Australias best players of the game, I have also played 1100 hours of tf2. I admit that I was addicted, but this game was worth being addicted to, farmville is by far the worst game I have encountered in my lifetime, it will be interesting to see what the next kind of no doubt worst game ever facebook will come up with :3

anyone who thinks a game is worth being addicted to is an absolute idiot.

i dont think being addicted to a game is an being an idiot.. if you have nothing to do at night and cant sleep i dont see why not to play the games for most of the night
